Isaiah 60:8-22

⁸Who are these that fly like a cloud,
    and ^(A)like doves to their windows?
⁹For ^(B)the coastlands shall hope for me,
    ^(C)the ships of Tarshish first,
^(D)to bring your children from afar,
    their silver and gold with them,
for the name of the Lord your God,
    and for the Holy One of Israel,
    because ^(E)he has made you beautiful.

¹⁰^(F)Foreigners shall build up your walls,
    and ^(G)their kings shall minister to you;
for in my wrath I struck you,
    but in my favor I have had mercy on you.
¹¹^(H)Your gates shall be open continually;
    day and night they shall not be shut,
^(I)that people may bring to you the wealth of the nations,
    with their kings led in procession.
¹²^(J)For the nation and kingdom
    that will not serve you shall perish;
    those nations shall be utterly laid waste.
¹³^(K)The glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
    the cypress, the plane, and ^(L)the pine,
to beautify the place of my sanctuary,
    and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
¹⁴^(M)The sons of those who afflicted you
    shall come bending low to you,
^(N)and all who despised you
    shall bow down at your feet;
^(O)they shall call you the City of the Lord,
    the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁵^(P)Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
    with no one passing through,
^(Q)I will make you majestic forever,
    a joy from age to age.
¹⁶^(R)You shall suck the milk of nations;
    you shall nurse at the breast of kings;
and you shall know that ^(S)I, the Lord, am your Savior
    and your Redeemer, ^(T)the Mighty One of Jacob.

¹⁷Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
    and instead of iron I will bring silver;
instead of wood, bronze,
    instead of stones, iron.
I will make your overseers peace
    ^(U)and your taskmasters righteousness.
¹⁸^(V)Violence shall no more be heard in your land,
    devastation or destruction within your borders;
^(W)you shall call your walls Salvation,
    and your gates Praise.

¹⁹^(X)The sun shall be no more
    your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
    give you light;^[a]
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.^[b]
²⁰Your sun shall no more go down,
    nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and ^(Y)your days of mourning shall be ended.
²¹^(Z)Your people shall all be righteous;
    ^(AA)they shall possess the land forever,
^(AB)the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
    that I might be glorified.^[c]
²²^(AC)The least one shall become a clan,
    and the smallest one a mighty nation;
^(AD)I am the Lord;
    in its time I will hasten it.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

³⁵^(A)And as ^(B)Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that ^(C)the Christ is the son of David? ³⁶David himself, ^(D)in the Holy Spirit, declared,

^(E)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies ^(F)under your feet.”’

³⁷David himself calls him Lord. So ^(G)how is he his son?” And the great throng ^(H)heard him gladly.

Beware of the Scribes

³⁸^(I)And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces ³⁹and have the best seats in the synagogues and ^(J)the places of honor at feasts, ⁴⁰^(K)who devour widows' houses and ^(L)for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

⁴¹^(M)And he sat down opposite ^(N)the treasury and watched the people ^(O)putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. ⁴²And a poor widow came and put in two ^(P)small copper coins, which make a penny.^[a] ⁴³And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, ^(Q)this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. ⁴⁴For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her ^(R)poverty has put in everything she had, all ^(S)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

13 ^(T)And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” ²And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? ^(U)There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

³And as he sat on ^(V)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, ^(W)Peter and James and John and ^(X)Andrew asked him ^(Y)privately, ⁴“Tell us, ^(Z)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” ⁵And Jesus began to say to them, ^(AA)“See that no one leads you astray. ⁶^(AB)Many will come in my name, saying, ^(AC)‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. ⁷And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, ^(AD)do not be alarmed. This ^(AE)must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁸For ^(AF)nation will rise against nation, and ^(AG)kingdom against kingdom. There will be ^(AH)earthquakes in various places; there will be ^(AI)famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

⁹^(AJ)“But ^(AK)be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten ^(AL)in synagogues, and you will stand before ^(AM)governors and ^(AN)kings for my sake, ^(AO)to bear witness before them. ¹⁰And the gospel must first be proclaimed ^(AP)to all nations. ¹¹And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, ^(AQ)do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say ^(AR)whatever is given you in that hour, ^(AS)for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. ¹²^(AT)And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. ¹³^(AU)And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. ^(AV)But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

The Year of the Lord's Favor

61 ^(A)The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has ^(B)anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;^[a]
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and ^(C)the opening of the prison to those who are bound;^[b]
²^(D)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    ^(E)and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
³to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    ^(F)to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
^(G)the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
^(H)that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, ^(I)that he may be glorified.^[c]
⁴^(J)They shall build up the ancient ruins;
    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
    the devastations of many generations.

⁵^(K)Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;
    foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;
⁶^(L)but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
    they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
^(M)you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
    and in their glory you shall boast.
⁷^(N)Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;
    instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;
therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;
    they shall have everlasting joy.

⁸^(O)For I the Lord love justice;
    I hate robbery and wrong;^[d]
^(P)I will faithfully give them their recompense,
    ^(Q)and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
⁹Their offspring shall be known among the nations,
    and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge them,
    that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed.

¹⁰^(R)I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
^(S)for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself ^(T)like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    ^(U)and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
¹¹For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause ^(V)righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.

The Day of the Lord Will Come

3 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them ^(A)I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, ²^(B)that you should remember the predictions of ^(C)the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, ³knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come ^(D)in the last days with scoffing, ^(E)following their own sinful desires. ⁴^(F)They will say, “Where is the promise of ^(G)his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” ⁵For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth ^(H)was formed out of water and through water ^(I)by the word of God, ⁶and that by means of these the world that then existed ^(J)was deluged with water and ^(K)perished. ⁷But by the same word ^(L)the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and ^(M)destruction of the ungodly.

⁸But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and ^(N)a thousand years as one day. ⁹^(O)The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise ^(P)as some count slowness, but ^(Q)is patient toward you,^[a] ^(R)not wishing that any should perish, but ^(S)that all should reach repentance. ¹⁰But ^(T)the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then ^(U)the heavens will pass away with a roar, and ^(V)the heavenly bodies^[b] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.^[c]

¹¹Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, ^(W)what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, ¹²^(X)waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and ^(Y)the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! ¹³But according to his promise we are waiting for ^(Z)new heavens and a new earth ^(AA)in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

¹⁴^(AB)Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him ^(AC)without spot or ^(AD)blemish, and ^(AE)at peace. ¹⁵And count ^(AF)the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as ^(AG)our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you ^(AH)according to the wisdom given him, ¹⁶as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. ^(AI)There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, ^(AJ)as they do the other Scriptures. ¹⁷You therefore, beloved, ^(AK)knowing this beforehand, ^(AL)take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. ¹⁸But ^(AM)grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ^(AN)To him be the glory both now and to the day of ^(AO)eternity. Amen.
